To you who are in trouble because of your father or mother’s gambling.

Gambling addiction is a disease in which a person spends money to gamble on pachinko, horse racing, and other forms of gambling, and wants to stop but cannot.

Gambling with money may be fun sometimes, but overdoing it can lead to illness, loss of money, arguments with friends and family, inability to go to school or work, and other very troubling situations.

When a gambler gambles, his or her brain sends out a message that he or she wants to do more.

As that message becomes stronger, you will not be able to stop, even if you want to stop yourself.

Any gambler may become a gambler, but those who start gambling at a young age or whose parents are gamblers are more likely to become addicted.

Gambling addiction is a disease, so do not try to cure it alone. Talk to a doctor or someone you can talk to and get help.

What if my father or mother is a gambler?

First, it is not your fault that your father or mother cannot stop gambling. Your father or mother has become ill. The children are not to blame.

Children should talk about their feelings. You may be sad, angry, or anxious about your father or mother.

If this happens, talk to a trusted adult. Talk to a teacher, school counselor, or someone you feel comfortable talking to.

When a father or mother wants to stop gambling and goes to a hospital or self-help group, the child should tell him or her to “hang in there” and the father or mother will be happy.

Children should take care of themselves as well. You may be busy or worried about your father or mother, but take care of yourself as well. Do what you love, play with friends, and find something fun to do.
