Providing Preventive Education on Gambling Addiction at Yamato University
On December 3, 2025, a gambling addiction prevention education program was conducted at Yamato University for approximately 180 students from the Faculty of Informatics.
In implementing this program, we had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Ryotaro Tanose, former Chairperson of the Liberal Democratic Party’s General Council, founder of Nishi-Yamato Gakuen, and President of Yamato University. With his understanding and support for our commitment to prevention education, this initiative was made possible.
The session was conducted in an interactive format, allowing students to reflect on their own everyday behaviors and understand the differences between recreational gambling and gambling addiction. In addition, we explained that addiction is a “disease” that anyone can develop but from which recovery is possible. We also emphasized the importance of not engaging in gambling during university years, not inviting others to gamble, and not lending or borrowing money.
Identical questionnaires were administered before and after the lecture, and the results showed that students’ understanding of gambling addiction deepened, with clear changes observed in their perceptions.
At present, Yamato University has implemented this prevention education across three faculties—the Faculty of Informatics, the Faculty of Sociology, and the Faculty of Political Science and Economics—with a total of approximately 1,000 students participating. Looking ahead, we have also received requests to hold lectures from April next year onward, and under our policy of providing prevention education to all faculties and all students, we will continue to roll out these programs sequentially.
