The Society Concerned about Gambling Addiction is now accepting applications for its 2027 Research Grant. The grant aims to promote research and practice-based research on gambling addiction and related addiction issues, and to return the results to society.

In addition to academic research, we place great importance on knowledge gained in the field, including support for people with gambling problems and their families, suicide prevention, crime prevention, and harm reduction. We also welcome action research by practitioners in medicine, social welfare, law, education, and private support organizations, as well as research based on overseas policies and programs.

For the purposes of this grant, "gambling" also includes pachinko and speculative investment activities such as FX and crypto-asset trading.

■ Overview

・Research themes: 18 themes, including medical, psychological, social welfare, and legal/policy research; studies on online casinos; evaluations of self-help groups and the 12 steps; prevention and awareness for young people; family support models; the impact of gambling advertising and online video content; and research on pioneering overseas systems and programs

・Grant amount: Single-year grants of JPY 500,000 to 1,000,000 per project / Multi-year grants of JPY 500,000 to 1,000,000 per year per project (up to JPY 3,000,000 in total, for a maximum of 3 years)

・Number of grants: Approximately 2 to 3 projects in total (single-year and multi-year combined)

・Grant period: April 1, 2027 – March 31, 2028 (multi-year grants: up to March 31, 2030)

・Eligibility: Researchers at universities and research institutions (including part-time researchers and postdocs); medical, welfare, and legal professionals; private organizations working on addiction support (including unincorporated associations); graduate students (a letter of recommendation from the academic supervisor is required); and research groups composed of the above

・Application deadline: Sunday, January 31, 2027, 23:59 (JST), must arrive by then

* Directors and auditors of our organization, gambling-related businesses (including publicly managed racing and betting, the pachinko industry, casino-related companies, and their affiliated organizations) and their officers and employees, and individuals or organizations receiving financial support from gambling-related businesses may not apply as principal investigators.

Notification of results: Late March 2027

Research period: April 1, 2027 – March 31, 2028

Report deadline: April 15, 2028 (must arrive by then)

Results presentation: May – June 2028 (Gambling Addiction Awareness Week)
